How to choose a Starlink Mini mount for your vehicle

There are a lot of Starlink Mini mounts on the market now, and plenty of them are good. The right one depends on your vehicle and how you travel, not on who has the longest feature list. This checklist covers the questions we would ask if we were buying one ourselves.

Where will it mount?

Start with the vehicle. A roof rack or platform, a bare steel roof and factory roof rails each need different hardware, so check that the mount suits yours before anything else. Magnets only hold on steel. Nothing on the roof should sit higher than the dish, so think about tents, light bars and baskets as well. Our mounting and wiring guide walks through the options.

Will the dish be secure?

A dish on a roof is on show in every car park. Ask whether the mount locks, whether the lock is easy to live with every day, and whether the mounting hardware can be undone from outside while the mount is locked.

How will it get power?

This is the question most often skipped. Starlink rates the Mini for 12 to 48V, which puts a 12V vehicle at the very bottom of the range, and long cable runs lose voltage. Ask what will supply the dish, how long the cable is and whether you will need a separate converter. Our guide to 12V voltage drop explains why it matters.

What happens in the heat?

Airflow while the vehicle is moving is normally enough for any mount. The harder case is being parked in the sun with no breeze. Starlink lists the Mini's maximum operating temperature as 50°C, so ask how a mount lets heat out when the vehicle is standing still. There is more in our guide to heat on the roof.

Does the lid pool water?

Look at how the cover sits. A lid set down inside a rim can hold a puddle and a layer of dirt directly above the dish. A lid that sits flush lets water and dirt run off as you drive.

How high does it sit?

A lower mount catches less wind and leaves more room under garage doors and car park entries. Measure your clearance with the mount included.

What is it made of?

A roof is a hard place to live, with sun, salt and corrugations all working on it. Look at the material and thickness of the housing, the finish, and whether the hardware is stainless steel. For a clear lid, ask whether the material is UV stable.

Will it fit your rack?

Slotted bases suit most racks, but check yours. As a rule, use the rack maker's own hardware, such as ARB or Rhino-Rack fittings on their own racks, because it is made for those channels.

What is included, and what is extra?

Compare the complete cost, not the headline price. Mounting hardware, a power lead, a voltage converter, cooling and a lock may be included, optional or not offered at all. Neither approach is wrong. You just want to compare like with like.

Who will help afterwards?

Find out who you can call if something does not fit, and whether there is someone near you who can install it. A phone that gets answered is worth a lot when you are partway through a job on the roof.

A simple mount or a complete kit?

Plenty of good, cheaper mounts exist, and a simple one suits many people. If you use your dish on the odd weekend, already have a suitable power supply and take the dish inside when you get home, a basic mount may be all you need.

A complete powered and lockable kit is for people who want the dish to live on the vehicle. That usually means touring for weeks at a time, working from the vehicle, or simply wanting power, cooling and security sorted in one go.

What we build

Our Fan-Cooled Rooftop Power Hub for Starlink Mini is the second kind, sold as one complete kit. It is a lockable mount in 3mm marine grade aluminium with a flush 6mm acrylic lid, a built in DC-DC converter that delivers a regulated 30V to the dish, and two thermostatic cooling fans. It sits 60mm high, fits the Starlink Mini only, and is made in small batches in our own workshop in Somerville, Victoria. If you would like a hand fitting one, the Kettle Trusted Installers map is the place to start. And if a simpler mount suits you better, that is a perfectly good answer too.

Common questions

Do I need a powered mount for a Starlink Mini?

Not always. A simple mount suits many people, especially for occasional use with a suitable power supply already in place. A powered kit suits people who want the dish to live on the vehicle with power, cooling and security handled together.

Does the Kettle mount fit the Standard or Gen 3 Starlink?

No. It fits the Starlink Mini only.

Will the Kettle mount fit my roof rack?

The slotted base suits around 99 percent of roof racks, using the rack maker's own hardware. Magnetic feet are available for steel roofs, and there is a roof rail clamp for the Ford Next-Gen Ranger with factory roof rails. For anything unusual, contact us and we will help work out a solution.

Is the Kettle mount lockable?

Yes. It has a push to close zinc alloy latch that locks automatically when the lid is closed.
